In this multi-part series, you\u2019ll learn some of the best Google Drive Add-Ons and Chrome Extensions for use in middle school and high school English &amp; Language Arts, History &amp; Social Studies, World Languages, and Science classrooms. \u00a0You\u2019ll also learn strategies that promote more effective student ownership of the writing process and effective teacher feedback. In this first post, we\u2019ll be focusing on WriteWell for Google docs. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is WriteWell for Google Docs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/writewell-for-google-docs\/hekjkpjhhepkcpaibpepbikjadcdneoh?utm_source=permalink\"><b>WriteWell for Google Docs<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Google Docs Add-on that includes a series of templates for elementary school, middle school, and high school classrooms. These templates can be incorporated into a wide range of student writing activities and are well suited to Common Core writing tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10833\" style=\"margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px;\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-2.jpg\" alt=\"WriteWell for Google Docs\" width=\"840\" height=\"585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-2.jpg 840w, https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-2-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-2-768x535.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Install WriteWell for Google Docs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a new Google Doc. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add-ons<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Google Docs menu bar. \u201cGet Add-ons\u201d will appear. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click \u201cGet Add-ons.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clicking \u201cGet Add-ons\u201d \u00a0leads you to a repository of Google Add-Ons where you can search for WriteWell for Google Docs or find it in the Productivity section. Once you\u2019ve located WriteWell for Google Docs, click the \u201c+ Free\u201d icon and allow the app access to your Google account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10834\" style=\"margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px;\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-3.jpg\" alt=\"WriteWell for Google Docs\" width=\"966\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-3.jpg 966w, https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-3-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-3-768x405.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any Add-on, once you\u2019ve installed WriteWell for Google Docs it will be available for use with any Google Doc you create in the future. One advantage of an \u201cadd-on\u201d is that it becomes part of Google Docs. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting Started with WriteWell for Google Docs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By default, WriteWell for Google Docs will display its most \u201cPopular\u201d templates. These are worth browsing, but teachers can easily locate grade-level and topic-appropriate templates. For instance, High School teachers should click on the \u201cK12 &#8211; High School\u201d tab to unveil useful templates for high school writing activities. \u00a0Likewise, middle school teachers can click on the \u201cK12 &#8211; Middle School\u201d tab, and elementary school teachers the \u201cK12 &#8211; Elementary School\u201d tab, to find templates appropriate for their grade level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a sampling of useful High School and Middle School templates:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argumentative Essay<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five-Part Essay<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5- Paragraph Essay<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal Narrative<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Literary Analysis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short Story<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Paper<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expository Essay<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book Report<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opinion Essay<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historical Event<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science Lab Report<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autobiography<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ebook<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Use WriteWell for Google Docs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To use WriteWell for Google Docs, click on Add-Ons in the Google Docs menu bar and locate the WriteWell for Google Docs add-on you installed. Click on \u201cStart\u201d unveil the templates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, browse or search for your desired template and click on it. A box will appear with an image that provides a brief overview of the template. Click on \u201cGenerate Template\u201d in the bottom of the right corner to use it. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the example below, I have selected the \u201cFive Part Essay\u201d under the \u201cK12 &#8211; High School\u201d tab:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10835\" style=\"margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px;\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-1.png\" alt=\"WriteWell for Google Docs\" width=\"480\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-1.png 480w, https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-1-254x300.png 254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10836\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-4.png\" alt=\"WriteWell for Google Docs\" width=\"188\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-4.png 229w, https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/WriteWell-for-Google-Docs-4-176x300.png 176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/>At this point, a WriteWell for Google Docs box appears and provides tips. So, I can click on \u201c[Topic]\u201d or \u201c[Body Section 1]\u201d or other sections to reveal these tips. For instance, when I click on [Body Section 1] a tip appears that reads: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify your first point. This is your strongest example. Use supporting evidence such as quotes from your research. This is not limited to one paragraph.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, students are well served by timely and helpful reminders as they work their way through their essay writing assignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many templates also come with an example. For example, there is an \u201cEssay Example\u201d as part the Five Part Essay Writing template. So, aided by both tips and examples, students can proceed to fill in the template with their writing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For their part, teachers would be well served to review WriteWell with Google Docs templates and decide which are best for student use. Note that it is also possible to request a template. Under \u201cGenerate Template\u201d is a link that leads to an online request form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategies for Using WriteWell for Google Docs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two fundamental strategies a teacher could pursue in getting students to use the template content. One, a teacher might edit and revise a WriteWell for Google Docs template so that it better suits the needs of that particular writing assignment. In this scenario, the teacher would revise the template in a Google Doc and then share that Google Doc with the students. (The sharing of this Google Doc could be accomplished via Google Classroom, for instance.) In this case, the students would not even need the WriteWell for Google Docs add-on. Yet, if students do not have the WriteWell with Google Docs app they do not have access to template \u201ctips\u201d and \u201cexample.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, a teacher might indeed want the installed on each student\u2019s Google account. Depending on the school or district\u2019s tech policies, the installation of WriteWell for Google Docs might be undertaken immediately by the student\u2019s themselves or perhaps after authorization by the technology department. In any event, students must have a Google account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WriteWell for Google Docs is a wonderful add-on for writing in K-12 classrooms. It provides helpful structure and organization for student writing activities in addition to useful tips and examples.
