If you are ready to discover how maps can assist in expanding learning for your students, then read on!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"c8 c3\">1) Teachers can expand a map activity outside their classroom walls.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c11\"><span class=\"c1\">My Maps allows users to import data into a map from a Google Sheet, KML file, or CSV file. Teachers can use a Google Form to collect data and then import the Form\u2019s data into a new My Map. Teachers and students can share their form via social media and ask for information from people anywhere in the world!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"c17\"><span class=\"c8 c3 c18 c20\">Example<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"c7\"><span class=\"c13 c3\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id%3D1ncX4buqTWx7kzTyQLFyd2RLcJYM%26usp%3Dsharing&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721267000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFzvo0wfKeu3d5Ii9pVhP-73_rt9Q\">Presentation Attendee Locations<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0&#8211; In this example, I have imported data from a Google Form<\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0I shared out during a conference presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/NTM8FHAa_D0mVLiRo-zd_djoGQta0qCgWTw3RwxG8nQuiJhidcOg9JiujASPeQudsnDse730Omc6yhByelqr-mSMnUnouf1k6uTge2JyA15HLYwiCg6lFUNufHQ8gD-aZoDlkiXh\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-09-18 at 1.34.49 PM.png\" width=\"651\" height=\"303\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"c7\"><span class=\"c8 c3\">2) Students can create a worldwide weather map to show earth\u2019s weather patterns<\/span><span class=\"c1\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c11\"><span class=\"c1\">Students can look up current weather information from specific locations across the world. They can then add those locations to their map, add the respective weather data, and create a worldwide weather map.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"c17\"><span class=\"c8 c3 c18\">Example<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"c7\"><span class=\"c13 c3\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id%3D1rGUMTKAlF1_SiPQUhLQmVfsmRqw%26usp%3Dsharing&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721269000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEFQezAyQiG1oaWE3c3o-RUyF8fuQ\">High Temperatures Map<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0&#8211; In this example, the map has a collection of high temperatures from across the world for students to explore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/L8LhnTRVOTdUcgZJ1HD9nsulf1wSHuAuy3T_V1z-p8VlqMlWBDn9vMg4FoFPV4Lu-A4LYwmlvPXBRQVOQ-FHiPNUZm3BJSf82ifWkRC1uoFDHbof9al1H_s5NW10mOI2H2gyUm1T\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-09-18 at 1.35.45 PM.png\" width=\"685\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"c8 c3\">3) Students can look up\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c8 c3\">local newspaper headlines around the world<\/span><span class=\"c8 c3\">\u00a0and add them to a collaborative Google Map on current events.<\/span><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c11\"><span class=\"c3\">By collecting newspaper headlines from a variety of places, students will see how various events are covered in different locations. Students can also see how the news cycle is far different in other countries than in the United States\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3\">as they compare and contrast it with their own.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"c17\"><span class=\"c8 c3 c18\">Example<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"c7\"><span class=\"c13 c3\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id%3D17RaUcLX6KcZreULepFbJbsJJ2ZU%26usp%3Dsharing&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721270000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEBAqv6MwV4nymsmwJFPpDTh2N_dw\">Newspaper Headlines<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0&#8211; In this map, students have collected various news headlines from multiple newspapers in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c17\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/V37ZWjjAtvh0Bx4zh4PuUdFfKFxahc7oTMfNn4HpwyoHIE3vaxthGbPMRRVQbFSuO7HLQXK1xa2lUaj5jf0-3-xMcJ3CP1lQD_U-zrSdPvg0huIRzDV1V43BtpH65hPwQJ9CGLQ7\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-09-18 at 3.36.06 PM.png\" width=\"668\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"c3 c8\">4) Students can screencast their maps using a Google Chrome extension, such as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c13 c8 c3\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/screencastify-screen-vide\/mmeijimgabbpbgpdklnllpncmdofkcpn?hl%3Den&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721271000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG4AYYwroiSW0cdWKBwQpeQtvjxeg\">Screencastify<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c11\"><span class=\"c3\">S<\/span><span class=\"c3\">tudents can use a screencast tool to capture their map and talk through the map\u2019s markers. Students can become virtual tour guides and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3\">provide a virtual field trip<\/span><span class=\"c3\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"c9 c8 c3\">5) Students can open their custom map in Google Maps and use Street View to get an actual camera view of their marker.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c11\"><span class=\"c3\">After publishing their map, students can open the map in Google Maps and have access to Street View. Students can then explore the actual image of the area they are working on and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3\">not simply\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c1\">the location of the marker. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"c9 c8 c3\">6) Students can plot the movements of historic campaigns and how they impacted each region encountered.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c10 c15 c14\"><span class=\"c1\">History teachers can have students find the path armies took during times of war, and document how battles and stops along the way affected the area. Students can find most battlefield locations using Wikipedia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"c17\"><span class=\"c8 c3 c18\">Example<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c13 c3\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id%3D1Uv100bDhrf4gnkh-GXaNygTd-ec%26usp%3Dsharing&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721272000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGkY-LCNjPqU4x4E1ICS_482HtiJg\">Sherman\u2019s March to the Sea<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c3\">\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3\">In this teacher-created example, the points on the map identify the various engagements undertook by Sherman\u2019s army. Students are able to visualize the route Sherman\u2019s army took en route to Savanna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c10\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/CO-DZ4VOk7HwJTxdVQarc43k77lk2SKKSY0wAzGUm4Ci_P1HBBUaAiJM-zC4sTWKPhTvye-ALAR5sxWnf-GEicltQy_eIkcDz7lilCMRyAcAPXCqYJSWOErYRBprBB-tdZmKzHNg\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-09-18 at 3.37.32 PM.png\" width=\"703\" height=\"397\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"c9 c8 c3\">7) Teachers (or students) can create latitude and longitude scavenger hunts, prompting students to discover why certain places on the map are important.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c10 c15 c14\"><span class=\"c3\">Students can enter Latitude and Longitude points into the search bar in My Maps.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3\">Doing so\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c1\">allows students to locate specific points on a map and analyze the importance of the area.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c10\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/ChSll-bIL2OMBYw5UxZGgAVRPRBx44WhaWIpZ3C1p-oXOyNnh7PrQ13HaicnF_tCG84v7PNV-bR8SALLlKvsCMBvnEJ_fk37cO8z7oNNsPXTBtVvahm-D154owgC56MSa-RcEKfj\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-03-08 at 9.47.10 AM.png\" width=\"665\" height=\"347\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c10\"><span class=\"c8 c3 c9\">8) Students can follow and track the route of explorers as they made their journeys.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"c1\">In a social studies classroom studying the Age of Exploration, teachers can have students track the routes of explorers as they journeyed from Europe across the world. Students can mark each stop they make with a description and analysis of the location.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"c17\"><span class=\"c8 c3 c18\">Example<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c3 c13\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?page%3Dexplore%26mid%3D1NjBEQ0uWJR8FGiB_Bv8kTjYiXQw%26ll%3D-3.81666561775622e-14%252C0%26z%3D1&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721274000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEnSjfNDoARY-aEXjSU1D05esOrcQ\">European Exploration Map &#8211; Found in the Google Maps Gallery<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0&#8211; This is a great example of the potential Google My Maps has and showcases the power of sharing maps through the Maps Gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c10\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/dxgWHskF7pGzwifVbfWRorHLWkOlnpwuTtwbQl0QRllKpGNLITMhv1pBH5ng6g3yNG1X-2p89qnnrQ8WqttJv0EwUUmC9Z00XZPvqxW2pgYFVbMtTZvsKotI_ASzOfQLIQiL3QEg\" alt=\"Explorers Example.png\" width=\"712\" height=\"347\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"c9 c8 c3\">9) Students can track the movements of major characters in a novel.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"c3\">Students reading a book with characters moving throughout a non-fiction location can track their stops and document what is taking place during the journey. For example, students\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3\">can document the stops of the Joad\u2019s in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3 c12\">Grapes of Wrath\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c1\">as they journey from Oklahoma to California along Route 66.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 class=\"c10\"><span class=\"c20 c8 c3 c18\">Example<\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"c10\"><span class=\"c8 c3 c18\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c0\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/viewer?mid%3D1wfiN7UGkz-LpHAXxXh6MwP0LFR4%26ll%3D38.17686335324172%252C-97.62455600000004%26z%3D4&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721275000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEKt9kBV223-v1pAqlwhySmkRGzng\">The Grapes of Wrath &#8211; Rt. 66 Journey<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c3 c12\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c3\">In this great map by Grant Sento, he uses My Maps to outline the trip of the Joad family from Oklahoma to California and all their stops in between.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c10\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/QNL7nHxq-dD6u2FmcNPNR7FPkPn3Ro8t3fPNRvdMFZfy4jQgE5H8duSRZACjximYYsAyK2mbUSLVbDunvab90ZxrdFfw_LXRTLQYwPMkpg8idrYl6lvqeqBP0zNP4N3JR1OLSkdQ\" alt=\"Joads.png\" width=\"684\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c10\"><span class=\"c8 c3\">10) Students can contribute their map to the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c13 c8 c3\"><a class=\"c5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/maps.google.com\/gallery\/&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1507301721276000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEL-z5ez0cOxbVUDMYdNpVso1QzHw\">Google Maps Gallery<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c9 c8 c3\">\u00a0for anyone to find and use.<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"c4 lst-kix_y3mr8z1srpzd-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c11\"><span class=\"c1\">When students finish building their custom My Map, they have the ability to publish their map in the Google Maps Gallery. The gallery showcases maps created on any number of topics, from Pokemon Go gym locations to tracking Lewis and Clark&#8217;s expedition across North America.
