is still much confusion and, at times, heated debate regarding what this set of ideas actually means and looks like in practice. Fortunately, there has been a relative convergence of key concepts and essential components of Personalized Learning (PL) that can help frame a more nuanced discussion moving forward as schools explore and implement different iterations of PL.

As Larry Cuban referenced in a , the core idea of personalized learning is far from new. For over a century, reformers have been advocating for a more individualized approach to instruction. As he articulates, the current call to action by personalized learning advocates to shift from teacher to student-centered learning environments is the modern take on this viewpoint.

Despite the long history of advocacy for student-centered learning, PL has been one of the more elusive reform efforts to actually define. One of the many reasons for this has been that the concept of personalized learning can be applied to a wide range of instructional philosophies that result in vastly different forms of implementation. Despite this challenge, Richard Cullatta (Currently CEO of ISTE) <a class="c0"
