{"id":12178,"date":"2018-09-10T12:22:39","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T16:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/?p=12178"},"modified":"2018-12-11T16:27:37","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T20:27:37","slug":"can-sel-spark-the-shift-to-student-agency-from-tom-driscoll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/can-sel-spark-the-shift-to-student-agency-from-tom-driscoll\/","title":{"rendered":"Can SEL Spark the Shift to Student Agency?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c2\">More than any other idea in education,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c2\">the idea of student agency\u00a0<\/span>suffers from<span class=\"c2\">\u00a0the greatest disconnect between intentions and outcomes<\/span><span class=\"c1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c2\">As I referenced in a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c2 c11\"><a class=\"c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.tomdriscoll3.com\/blog\/framingpl&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1535736203717000\">recent post<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">, emerging student-centered instructional models attempt to shift much of the ownership and control (agency) of the learning process over to students. \u00a0Whether it is an approach that customizes the student\u2019s path and pace through the curriculum, or is an inquiry-based environment that has students engage in a problem solving\/design thinking approach, students have greater degrees of agency in new models of student learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c2\">Yet this seems to be extraordinarily elusive when it comes to classroom practice. \u00a0I myself experienced this as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c6\"><a class=\"c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/flipped-history.blogspot.com\/p\/20-time_18.html&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1535736203717000\">a teacher who experimented with 20% Time in my high school courses<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">, albeit with mixed results<\/span><span class=\"c2\">. \u00a0In my current role at the district level, I see teachers in various contexts struggle to make this shift towards student agency as well. \u00a0Of course we can point to\u00a0<\/span>certain<span class=\"c1\">\u00a0classrooms or specific schools across the nation who do this effectively, but it has certainly not been implemented at scale the way other concepts have. Why is this so difficult? \u00a0What are we not getting it right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c2\">I recently started to think that I\u00a0<\/span>am not asking<span class=\"c2\"> the right questions. \u00a0What if instead of\u00a0<\/span>asking<span class=\"c1\">\u00a0about what the teacher is doing from an instructional design standpoint, I focus instead on the student experience. \u00a0Most of the feedback I hear from teachers (and experienced as a teacher myself) is that students cannot \u201chandle\u201d that much control. But we need to unpack that assumption a bit. \u00a0I understand what the teacher means by this, but what specifically do students need to know, think, and believe that would enable them to actually \u201chandle it\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c2 c9\">In other words, what skills, attitudes and behaviors best equip students to thrive in environments that require student agency over their learning?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/wxIT89YzBS9fqqzHvncInfBGEZM9l2d0o-w0mbLvOjOzwEDLCxIdwp4t8QaLTBhdaGnlhsSmLIeVoZ-glYPR4kHaftrenrrMArGg-crqRhBFsgrw0HKg-8dGW02tzFnozxmG1yQ-\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"331\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Image Source:\u00a0<span class=\"c6\"><a class=\"c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/casel.org\/what-is-sel\/&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1535736203718000\">https:\/\/casel.org\/what-is-sel\/<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c2\">When preparing for\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c6\"><a class=\"c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bwrsd.org\/&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1535736203719000\">Bristol Warren Regional School District<\/a><\/span>\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"c2\">recent Admin Retreat, I spent considerable time diving into social emotional learning (SEL). \u00a0As a district, we are\u00a0<\/span>working off of\u00a0<span class=\"c6\"><a class=\"c3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/casel.org\/what-is-sel\/&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1535736203719000\">CASEL\u2019s<\/a><\/span>\u00a0model that defines SEL as \u201cthe process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"c2\">I quickly realized that\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c2\">this may be THE missing piece<\/span><span class=\"c2\">. \u00a0Could\u00a0<\/span>SEL<span class=\"c2\">\u00a0be the key to unlocking students\u2019 ability to \u201chandle\u201d student<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"c1\">centered environments? \u00a0What if we focus more on strong SEL environments first before diving right into student agency? \u00a0Will this enable students to engage in student-centered learning? \u00a0Would the success of students then spark a revolution in student agency as teachers see students who once struggled in these contexts begin to thrive? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c4\"><span class=\"c2\">If this is the case, we should shift some of our focus towards the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c2\">knowledge and skills promoted by SEL<\/span><span class=\"c2\">, such as self<\/span>-awareness, self-management, and relationship skills,<span class=\"c2\">\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>students<span class=\"c2\">\u00a0can then tap into when engaged in student<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"c1\">centered environments. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11952\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Sign-up-for-our-Newsletter.png\" alt=\"Sign Up for our Newsletter!\" width=\"300\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than any other idea in education,\u00a0the idea of student agency\u00a0suffers from\u00a0the greatest disconnect between intentions and outcomes.
