Reflections on Justin Reich&#8217;s latests posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-433\" title=\"img_8059\" src=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org.s172784.gridserver.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/img_8059-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"School Bus\" width=\"144\" height=\"102\" \/>At EdTechTeacher, we have been wrestling with four essential questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why Change?<\/li>\n<li>What Does Change Look Like?<\/li>\n<li>How Do You Lead Change?<\/li>\n<li>How Do You Assess Change?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last week, EdTechTeacher Co-Director Justin Reich touched on some of these questions on <a title=\"EdTechResearcher\" href=\"http:\/\/edtechresearcher.org\" target=\"_blank\">EdTechResearcher<\/a>. In his post on February 13th, <em><a title=\"Article on EdTechResearcher\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechresearcher.com\/2012\/02\/which-facts-do-we-need\/\" target=\"_blank\">Which Facts Do We Need?<\/a><\/em>, Justin wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;What kinds of knowledge do you have to have at your fingertips in order to create new knowledge?&#8230;\u00a0This was a question that my 11.125 [MIT class] began the class wrestling with, as we read from John Bransford\u2019s excellent (and free)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/catalog.php?record_id=10126\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0How Students Learn<\/a>. Bransford introduces three key learning principles\u2013 two of which have to do with facts. The first principle is that all learning builds on prior learning, so all teaching needs to engage prior knowledge. The second principle is that students need to learn facts nested within conceptual schema. You can\u2019t teach concepts without facts, and you can\u2019t teach facts without concepts&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At EdTechTeacher, as we address the question of <em>why change?<\/em>\u00a0this issue of the necessity for fact acquisition often comes into play. With advances in technology, straight memorization is no longer a highly valued skill since many base facts are &#8220;Google-able&#8221;; however, how much knowledge do students to need have already acquired in order to construct more complex constructs and apply the higher-order thinking skills that are rapidly becoming the <em>currency<\/em>\u00a0of 21st Century Learning?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The point of that post [<em><a title=\"Article on EdTechResearcher\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechresearcher.com\/2012\/02\/which-facts-do-we-need\/\" target=\"_blank\">Which Facts Do We Need?<\/a>]\u00a0<\/em>was that students do need to memorize certain facts in the content areas if we want them to be able to do more cognitively difficult work.&#8221; wrote Justin in his <a title=\"Article from EdTechResearcher\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechresearcher.com\/2012\/02\/which-facts-do-we-need-part-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\">followup<\/a>.
