\"iStock<\/a>Technology now permeates almost every sphere of life and has proven transformative in diverse sectors – from marketing and communications to\u00a0journalism and political campaigning. Technology also offers new opportunities for student-student and educator-student interactions and new audiences for student-created content. Yet, few educators have experienced the transformative potential\u00a0of these new tools in their classrooms and few schools are aligned to meet the\u00a0demands and realities of a 21st century society. Schools systems have spent vast\u00a0sums equipping their schools with hardware, software, and network infrastructure,\u00a0but classroom instruction remains essentially unchanged. Most educators continue\u00a0traditional teacher-centered instructional practices, though today\u2019s society demands a broader and more active approach to developing communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.<\/p>\n

In this evolving landscape, the way content is created and shared is also undergoing a quiet revolution. Students are no longer limited to written essays or in-class presentations \u2014 they can now produce podcasts, videos, and multimedia projects that reach global audiences. We will need new leadership, from classroom teachers, school leaders, and district\u00a0administrators, to begin to realize the potential of technology in today\u2019s schools.\u00a0Scaling up our educational system to provide a 21st century education to the\u00a0growing numbers of college-bound students will be impossible without technology.\u00a0Technology will play a central role in the instructional core as we approach an era\u00a0of college-ready standards and assessments. Technology will never completely\u00a0displace effective modes of traditional instruction, but it will be an essential\u00a0element. The key ingredient to this successful transition will not be a killer app or the right kinds of fiber-optic cables; it will be educational leadership.<\/p>\n

In this new EdTechTeacher blog, Leading Change in Changing Times<\/em>, we plan to highlight\u00a0diverse views from educational leaders in and out of the classroom. We hope this\u00a0space will be a place to discuss an explore the challenges and opportunities of\u00a0fostering essential 21st century competencies. Our contributing authors will peer into tomorrow\u2019s classrooms to explore powerful conceptual frameworks and\u00a0sustainable, practical applications for leveraging new technologies. We will also look at issues related to professional learning, school cultures and policies, parent and family communication, infrastructure development, and other dilemmas facing 21st century school leaders.<\/p>\n

In all of EdTechTeacher\u2019s work with school leaders, we address four questions central to the process of educational transformation:<\/p>\n
