With the more flexible work schedule of the summer, it is also a great time to build up your Professional Learning Network (PLN) \u2014 especially one that expands beyond the walls of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few resources to help you do just that:<\/p>\n<h1>Build your Twitter Network<\/h1>\n<p>Twitter has become <i>the<\/i> online PLN for teachers. If you haven\u2019t yet explored Twitter as a professional development tool, then summer is a perfect time to do that. Check out <b>this article<\/b> to help you get started. Once you dive in, here are some great organizations and people to follow (in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/teacherjencarey\" target=\"_blank\">this author<\/a> of course):<\/p>\n<h2>Educators<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnKingatED\" target=\"_blank\">@JohnKingatED<\/a> &#8211; The Secretary of Education is an important individual to follow on Twitter. Here are a few blogs you should sign up for (in addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/dailygenius.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a>). If you need help organizing your Blogs, or would prefer not to sign up for blog updates via email, try using an RSS reader. My favorite is <a href=\"https:\/\/feedly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">feedly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eduwells.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">EDUWells<\/a> &#8211; Richard Wells is an international leader in the world of education. Read about his experiments in the classroom as both a teacher and an administrator.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanwylie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Wylie<\/a> &#8211; Every time I read Jonathan\u2019s blog, I learn something new! Use his blog to learn new tips and tricks, explore existing tools, and for deeper discussions on effective pedagogy.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolcatteacher.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cool Cat Teacher<\/a> &#8211; I love Vicki\u2019s blog. She explores everything from the emotional taxation of teaching to effective practice in the classroom.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/esheninger.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Principal of Change<\/a> &#8211; Eric Sheninger is an educational leader that advocates the role of reflection in educational practice.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/mindshift\/\" target=\"_blank\">MindShift\/KQED<\/a> &#8211; MindShift explores everything from devices in the classroom to the need for recess. You will always learn something relevant to your classroom on this site.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cultofpedagogy.com\/#\" target=\"_blank\">Cult of Pedagogy<\/a> &#8211; A digital magazine for educators.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalpedagogylab.com\/hybridped\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hybrid Pedagogy<\/a> &#8211; A peer reviewed, online journal that explores the role of technology in education.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/edtechteacher.org\/blog\" target=\"_blank\">EdTechTeacher<\/a> &#8211; Their instructors post a few times each week and cover topics from technology, to teaching, to the latest in research.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmrubinworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CMRubinWorld<\/a> &#8211; Writer, Cathy Rubin, regularly interviews some of the most prominent educators in the world. Her monthly global blogger series also features great work from a range of educators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Subscribe to a new Podcast<\/h1>\n<p>Podcasts are great ways to learn new things. Many of them are free, and you can find them in various places (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/itunes\/\" target=\"_blank\">iTunes Store<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">SoundCloud<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Google Play<\/a>, and more). Here are a few of my favorites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bamradionetwork.com\/educators-channel\/\" target=\"_blank\">BAM! Radio Educator\u2019s Channel<\/a> &#8211; Topics cover everything from worksheets to de-stressing at the end of finals. Shows are relatively short (just a few minutes).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\">NPR Education<\/a> &#8211; NPR\u2019s education channel<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/tedtalks-education\/id470623037?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\">TEDTalks Education<\/a> &#8211; The best collection of educational TED talks.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/education-talk-radio\/id403710198?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\">Education Talk Radio<\/a> &#8211; Educators and leaders talk about current trends in education.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-edtech-take-out\/id1079105737?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\">EdTech Take Out<\/a> &#8211; A podcast for teachers looking for innovative ways to incorporate technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Expanding Twitter, checking out new some blogs, and subscribing to podcasts are three easy, flexible, and free ways for educators to expand their PLN this summer (and even into the school year).
